After the founding of Guelph in 1827, the downtown core started its industrial and residential expansion into these neighbouring areas, bringing factories, mills and a railway to the core, industry and Italian immigrants to St. Patrick's Ward, housing for prominent figures and returning soldiers in St. George's and Exhibition Park, and renewed hope for the Italian Catholic population, in the Holy Rosary neighbourhood, who had left the ward in search of a better future.
